Magna Vista’s JROTC Raiders Take Championship
For the second consecutive week the Warrior Raiders took first place. The varsity team took control of the competition by placing in in the top 3 in 4 of 5 events. This enabled them to finish as Champions of Raider Guard held at Ft. Pickett on April 5th, 2008. There were 18 teams from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The Warriors finished in 1st place in 2 of 5 events on their way to their 3rd championship of the year.
The results were not finalized until Monday as a scoring mistake was being corrected. But in the end the Warriors prevailed with the title.
The rainy day did not stop Magna Vista from their goal, this raider challenge has eluded them for the past two years, finishing 2nd the previous two years. The Raiders exhibited their top physical conditioning by taking 2nd place in the Modified Army Physical Fitness event and 1st in the 3.2 mile Road March. Magna Vista has a strong history of finishing in first place in the One Rope Bridge Crossing and they continued that history by taking first place in this event. They also placed third in the First Aid and Litter Carry event and 6th in Land Navigation.
This was the last competition of the year for one of the strongest and best teams in Magna Vista JROTC history. They were champions at regional and state level competition. This was a special team that was led by strong leadership from seniors Will Paredes, Jake Wilkins, Carlton Crenshaw, and Leon Hudson. They had strong support from George Musgrove, Will Wingfield, Tim Wilson, Tyler Evans, and Branden McNeely. Other members of the competition team were Sam Likens and Jacob Atkins, Dylan Stovall, Samantha Monahan, Solomon Carter, Chris Herrera, and Kenneth Cook. Next year we have 5 returning from this year’s varsity team so expectations and goals will be high as well. These JROTC cadets have worked very hard this year and the results are the rewards of there work. I always tell them, “you do not win Raider Meets at the competition, they are won at practice".

As Magna Vista’s A Team was assisting in the operation of the first annual Magna Vista Border Clash Raider Challenge on 29 March 2008, the B Team was on the way to a championship finish.
Bassett High School, also from Henry County, came in with a strong performance for a second place finish. Other schools who attended; from VA – Courtland, Carroll County, Tunstall, and Prince George, NC – Morehead, Southern Lee, RJ Reynolds, and Robert B. Glenn.
The day started off wet and chilly with rain before the meet started at 7:45, it was a cool 43 degrees. The weather did not change much throughout the day with slight drizzles and cool temperatures.
The competition started off with the Modified Physical Fitness Test, the Bengal Raiders took first place in the event with Magna Vista a close second.
Top Individual Physical Fitness Honors went to:
Male----Josh Berry ------Bassett
Female--Brandi Russer----Southern Lee
In the next event, One Rope Bridge Crossing, Bassett had an excellent run to take first place, with Magna Vista just behind them in second. It was back and forth for these two teams in most of the events.
Bassett took another first place in the Land Navigation event; they were tied with Southern Lee with the number of points found, but came in with a faster time to take the tie breaker and top spot.
In the First Aid and Litter Carry, Southern Lee again had a tie, this time with Magna Vista in the number of points earned, but the Warriors won the tie breaker with a faster time to take first place.
The day ended with a 5K (3.2) mile Road March event that was run from Camp Lee Ford to Magna Vista High School. It was a grueling event that started off uphill for about 4- tenths of a mile and ended the same way, up hill for about ¾ of a mile. Robert B. Glenn brought home fist place in the 5K with Magna Vista finishing in second.
The consistency of Magna Vista is what allowed them to walk away with the Championship. They finished the day with (one) first place, (three) second place, and (one) fifth place finish.
Summary of top three in each event:
PT----------------Bassett / Magna Vista / Robert B Glenn
Rope Bridge-------Bassett / Magna Vista / Southern Lee --
First Aid---------Magna Vista / Southern Lee / Courtland
Land Navigation---Bassett / Southern Lee / Prince George
5K Road March-----Robert B Glenn / Magna Vista / Bassett
Final results for overall were:
Champions-------Magna Vista
Runner-up-------Bassett
3rd-------------Southern Lee
4th-------------Carroll County
It was a great day filled with close calls, what ifs, and what could have been. I would like to commend all teams and raiders for competing. Raiders, no matter what school, put in many hours of practice and conditioning to prepare for these events. Have a great year. Magna Vista will conclude the season by competing on April 5th at Ft. Pickett, in the Raider Guard Challenge.

On Saturday, March 15, 2008 the Magna Vista JROTC Raider Team traveled to Harnett Central High School in Angier, NC to compete in a Raider Tournament with 17 other teams. I want to applaud Harnett Central High School's JROTC cadre and cadets. They were very hospitable throughout the entire tournament and the night before.
In upholding Magna Vista’s strong raider tradition they had a very strong showing. They took first place in 2 of 5 events, second in 2 others, and an overall second place. The competition was very tight throughout the day. It all boiled down to one penalty on the rope bridge event. That one penalty stopped the Warriors from claiming the top overall trophy. How close, but so far away.
The Magna Vista Raiders darted off to a good start by displaying their top physical condition by taking first place in the Modified Army Physical Fitness Test. Leading the way for the Warriors was Freshman Tyler Evans who brought home top cadet of the tournament by finishing ahead of 140 other cadets in the physical fitness test. He was supported by Junior George Musgrove who brought home a third place.
Then it was off to the First Aid and Litter Carry, were Magna Vista scored a perfect 40 of 40 points, which several other teams did also. The tie breaker for the event was the time of the carry, this is were Magna Vista physcial fitnessed shined again, with a time of 21 seconds, one second ahead of the second place team.
The Warriors finished second in the 5K Road March and pulled to the bitter end to a second place finish in the Tug-of-War.
This was the first time we attended this meet, so all-in-all we considered this a good day. The weather was perfect, no one was injured, and the team was successful. Although, driving home in a tornado warning was not the most comfortable feeling, but our reliable bus driver brought us home safely.
Members of the team who attended the meet were:
Sr. Will Parades Battalion and Raider Commander
Jr. George Musgrove
Sr. Jake Wilkins
Sr. Carlton Crenshaw
Jr. Solomon Carter
Sr. Leon Hudson
So. Will Wingfield
So. Tim Tyler-Wilson
Fr. Tyler Evans
Sr. Sam Likens
So. Jake Atkins
So. Chris Herrera
Fr. Dylan Stovall
Magna Vista JROTC is hosting a Raider Competition on 29 March at the high school and Lee Ford Camp, starting approximately 7:45am. They are 16 teams entered in the tournament; this will be the first time we are hosting. Hope everything goes well.
The next weekend, April 5th, the Warrior Raiders will travel to Fort Pickett to compete in their annual Raider Guard Meet.
